Clothing (layering system)

• 2-3 moisture-wicking base layer tops, 1-2 base layer bottoms
• Mid-weight fleece or softshell insulating layer
• Down jacket rated to at least -15°C for routes above 4,000m
• Waterproof, breathable shell jacket and trousers
• Trekking trousers (2 pairs) and a pair of shorts for lower elevations
• Warm hat, sun hat, buff or neck gaiter, liner and insulated gloves

Footwear

• Broken-in waterproof trekking boots with ankle support
• Camp shoes or sandals for teahouse evenings
• 4-5 pairs of trekking socks, plus 2 liner socks
• Gaiters if trekking outside peak season (snow risk)

Sleep & Comfort

• 4-season sleeping bag (-15°C to -20°C comfort rating)
• Sleeping bag liner (adds warmth, keeps rentals clean)
• Earplugs and a headlamp with spare batteries

Health & Hygiene

• Personal first-aid kit including blister treatment
• Diamox (acetazolamide) if prescribed for altitude — discuss with your doctor beforehand
• Water purification tablets or a filter, plus a 2-3L capacity bottle or bladder
• High-SPF sunscreen and lip balm — UV exposure increases sharply with altitude
• Hand sanitiser and biodegradable soap

Documents & Money

• Passport with 6+ months validity and 2 spare passport photos
• Printed travel insurance policy with helicopter evacuation cover
• Nepali rupees in cash — card machines are unreliable above Namche Bazaar

What to rent in Kathmandu

Down jackets, sleeping bags, and trekking poles rent for a fraction of retail price in Thamel and are usually fine quality. We recommend buying boots and socks at home, where you can guarantee fit, and renting bulky insulation gear locally to save luggage weight.
